I think Obama was just joking
when he said he'd been through 57_states. instapundit and others have tried to paint it as a Dan Qwayle moment, but I think it's clear from the video that he was trying to be humorous. (not that I'm voting for him in November, but...)

Guam, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, Washington D.C. aren't states but he may have visited them for the primary campaign. He may have been talking about US territories as states. (Though I think his math is still off)
I don't think he was trying to be funny, if he was, he needs to work on his delivery.
I think he merely did what we all often do when we have other things on our minds; he misspoke. No one seriously believes that BO doesn't know how many states there are. He meant to say 47, but 57 came out.
Big deal.
What I find really bizarre is the fact that there are so many important issues to discuss...real policy differences between BO and JM, and we're talking about this.
I think Hinderaker has the salient point in noting that one can misspeak and not be senile, so we'd best remember this when the msm makes that charge against JM.
